One Love, Benne!

Dosa, the favourite staple of Amdavadis, was long associated with being all crispy and flaky. Until ofcourse, the ‘Benne’ from Bangalore started gaining all the attention. Amidst the storm of Benne-related trends, people from Ahmedabad started searching for “Benne Dosa near me”. And that’s when we decided to calm it all down by introducing Authentic Benne Dosa in Ahmedabad on our menu for the very first time!

Why is it famously called the ‘Devanagari Benne Dosa’?

Devangere is a small place in Karnataka that came into the public’s eye when a woman named Chenamma first started serving Ragi Dosas outside a theatre to support her family. Soon, her dosas became the talk of the town back in the 1920s.

Further, in the year 1930, Chenamma’s sons, Sonappa and Madavappa, modified their mother’s recipe a bit by adding avalakki (puffed rice) to it and topping it with the white makkhan. The dosas came out to be much fluffier, softer, and tastier. This recipe took no time in becoming everyone’s favourite and gained a name as the ‘Devanagari Benne Dosa’.

Yes! When Amdavadis started searching "Benne Dosa near me" and coming up empty, we decided to fix that. Vaani brought authentic Devanagari Benne Dosa to Ahmedabad — and we haven't looked back since.

Most varieties come with coconut chutney and sambar. The Authentic Benne Dosa Plain also gets spicy potato palya stuffing and red chutney. Though honestly? Many of our guests skip the sides entirely and just go for the butter. It's that good.

It's traditional white makkhan — unsalted, creamy, and nothing like the regular yellow butter. This is the authentic Davangere way, and it makes all the difference.
